Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Last year I was diagnosed with ADHD, a brain-based disorder where I have a limited attention span and suffer from bouts of impulsivity and hyperactivity. While there are many people in this country who believe that the disorder is a hoax, let me say that if you had to live my life, you would believe in it. There is a definite pattern that has developed since I was very young and the symptoms are too overwhelming to ignore. For those of you who think it is simply a matter of "will power," or "self-control," let me make it perfectly clear that it is not. As I see it, I have a chemical imbalance in my brain that does not allow me to consistantly think and act at the same time. I have trouble staying focused on one task at a time, I am constantly shifting from thing to thing. On the other hand, I can be so "into" what I am doing that I totally "tune out" the rest of the world for hours and hours. I seem to exist at either extreme. With proper medication and therapy, it is entirely possible to live something that resembles a "normal" life (whatever that is). The medications simply help to correct the imbalance in the brain of a person with ADHD, they help, but they do not cure. Please note that on average, people with ADHD have above-average intelligence and a highly stimulated creativity level. There are strengths as well as weaknesses to this disorder, and many times people overlook these. It is also important that in addition to the meds, the person with the ADHD take responsibility for their actions and make an effort to work on their behavior. The following links will take you to various resources on the web to help those dealing with ADHD personally. Please note that I assume no responsibility for the content of the links I present here. I think it is important for you to form your own impression and research the information yourself. You decide what makes sense and what doesn't. I hope that they help! ;-)

NOTE: U.S. citizens with ADHD are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Individuals with Disabilties Education Act (IDEA). Links for this information appear towards the bottom of this list.
